Year Group Overviews
Welcome to Nursery
The Early Years Curriculum is made up of seven areas of learning: three prime areas and four specific areas. In Nursery we primarily focus upon Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The four cornerstones of our curriculum are based around; the unique child, building positive relationships, creating an enabling environment and promoting learning and development. Throughout the year, children will have the opportunity to engage in play based learning through many different experiences.
We plan both adult and child led activities to build upon the children’s interests. We build up a picture of each child’s prior learning and extend this to develop their skills socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually. To find out more, please click on the links below.

Communication and Language
Teaching children to become effective communicators allows them to access all other areas of their learning. We use stories, songs and rhymes to broaden children’s vocabulary and teach children the important features of communication.
We encourage children to express and share ideas and feelings about their experiences and listen to one another. This enables children to build positive relationships with others.
Children will be taught to follow simple instructions and respond to and ask simple questions. Children will build up their conversational ability to become skilful and effective communicators using a wide range of vocabulary, within context.
Physical Development
Motor skills are an essential factor of development for all children. Both fine (small) motor skills and gross (large) motor skills will contribute to a child’s development and independence.
Gross motor skills involve the larger muscles in the arms, legs and torso. Gross motor activities include walking, running, throwing, lifting, kicking, etc. These skills also relate to body awareness, reaction speed, balance and strength.
Children will develop core strength, balance, coordination and spatial awareness through experience and practise.
We have free flow to the outdoor environment which can be accessed by all children at our times.
Fine motor skills involve the use of the smaller muscle of the hands, commonly in activities like using pencils, scissors, construction with lego or duplo, doing up buttons and opening lunch boxes.
The children will use small tools in their day to day learning and play to develop the muscles they will need when they become ready for writing.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
In Nursery we recognise the importance of understanding our own feelings and self awareness. We learn about these through the Zones of Regulation where children are taught strategies to use to help regulate their emotions and understand how they are feeling.
We encourage our children to build relationships, understand the importance of rules and routines and manage our own behaviour and learning.
Mathematics
We focus upon making maths meaningful and relevant to our nursery children, relating it to their everyday routines and play. Children are given practical, hands on experiences to help to develop their understanding of quantity, number, shape and measures.
We teach a short, small group maths session daily and extend this with additional activities throughout our environment.
In Nursery, we are always investigating and solving problems in our play, using mathematical language to explain our thinking.
English
Reading – In nursery, we develop our children’s early literacy skills through the celebration of stories, non-fiction texts and poems.
Children will have access to a huge variety of books in school and share stories on a daily basis.
Read Write Inc.
We follow the Read, Write Inc. approach to teach children the skills needed to read and write. In nursery, we support children to develop listening skills and sound discrimination that will prepare them for the learning of sounds.
Phonics is taught daily and targeted to each child’s individual ability. During the spring and summer terms, we will introduce the children to letters and their sounds through the Read Write Inc. scheme.
Writing – Throughout the year, the children will develop their fine and gross motor skills and begin to mark make.
As children become ready to write, we will teach the specific features and forms of writing e.g. pencil grip and letter formation.
Understanding the World
We teach children about the world in which they live and look at themselves, their families, other people, the local environment and community and the wider world.
Children will be taught to ask questions and explore the world around them to help deepen their knowledge and build their vocabulary.
They will develop their curiosity through investigations and explorations, making links to their own experiences. Adults will teach children to explain their thinking and make predictions building on prior knowledge.
Expressive Arts and Design
Children are taught to express their ideas through art, design, imaginative play and music.
Children are taught to use a range of materials effectively and purposefully. They are shown how to use simple tools and techniques to design and create their ideas.
Through small world and imaginative play, children are able to act out real life experiences and create their own adventures, helping them to make sense of the world around them. Adults support children in their play, enhancing vocabulary and teaching children how to develop ideas collaboratively.
Communication & Language
Children develop these skills daily through our Plan, Do, Review sessions. Adults model the correct use of spoken English, connecting ideas using sentences to add detail and explain thinking. Children are then asked to share their ideas and plan their learning.
Adults support the children during their play, using their questioning skills to deepen the learning process and extend children’s thinking.
Children are then asked to review their learning and talk through the processes that they have used. Adults extend their ideas through questioning and extending children’s sentence structure. This supports children to develop turn taking and conversational skills so that they become confident communicators.
Physical Development
Children will develop core strength, balance, coordination and spatial awareness both through taught skills based sessions and by a carefully planned environment, providing opportunities for children to practise their skills.
Children have continuous access to the outdoor environment where learning is carefully planned to ensure children are given a range of opportunities to support their gross motor skills development.
Fine motor skills development involves children using smaller movements with dexterity and precision.
Children will be given opportunities to strengthen the muscles in their hands and will be taught to use objects such as pencils, scissors and cutlery with accuracy and control.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We support children to understand their emotions and how we can understand the feelings of others. This helps children to build positive relationships with their peers and show empathy and compassion towards others.
Mathematics
In reception, all children take part in daily maths sessions where they are taught specific skills. The learning environment is then carefully planned to give children opportunities to apply these skills to solve problems, investigate and reason.
English
Reading – In reception, children are taught the skills they need to begin to read with fluency and understanding. Children are exposed to a range of stories and books everyday through fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Children are taught how to recite familiar stories and poems as well as compose their own.
Phonics is taught daily following the Read, Write Inc. approach. Children are taught to recognise letters and their sounds to enable them to begin to read and write simple sentences and beyond.
Writing – In reception, children are taught to write through their daily phonics sessions and our whole school writing approach ‘The Write Stuff’.
Understanding the World
The children will be taught about diversity, learning about other cultures, traditions and families. They will find out about the roles of important members of our society and the impact they have on our lives.
They will learn about the natural world around them, deepening their understanding of important processes such as the seasons and changing states of matter.
Expressive Arts and Design
Children will be taught the skills they need to join materials, thinking about cause and effect.
The learning environment provides planned opportunities for children to perform, building a repertoire of songs and dances. Children also take part in taught music sessions where they learn how to create sounds using instruments.
Welcome to Reception
The Early Years Curriculum is made up of seven areas of learning; three prime areas and four specific areas. In Reception, we ensure that children are secure within the prime areas of Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development; alongside building understanding and skills within the specific areas including Maths and Literacy. The four cornerstones of our curriculum are based around; the unique child, building positive relationships, creating an enabling environment and promoting learning and development. Throughout the year, children will have the opportunity to engage in play based learning through many different experiences; gaining new skills as well as consolidating their foundations of learning.
Our team plan both adult and child led tasks to build upon the children’s interests and teach new skills. We continuously assess prior learning and extend this to develop each child socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually. To find out more, please click on the links below.

negotiated curriculum in year 2
In Year 2, we continue our ‘Negotiated Curriculum’ approach, building on the learning that takes place in EY and Year 1.
In Year 2, we encourage the children to work with more independence, giving them ownership of their curriculum and providing opportunities for them to take their learning further. Children are encouraged to investigate, explore, ask questions and evaluate their work in order to help them deepen their understanding. They plan when and how they will complete their tasks within a set time and support one another when new challenges arise.
Process
In Year 2, Read Write Inc., Maths and English skills are taught discretely. Every other subject is taught through a negotiated curriculum, which is linked to a carefully chosen topic. Subject specific skills that children need in order to access certain subject areas, are taught directly before being presented in a negotiated way. Opportunities are created for children to experience learning in a meaningful and purposeful way, allowing them to develop the skills needed to become effective learners whilst developing their own time management.
Each day, children learn through either a whole class adult led activity, child-led investigation, or by choosing a ‘Rainbow Challenge.’ The learning environment consists of different areas both inside and outside the classroom, giving children the opportunity to work in a range of ways and with their peers.
The ‘Rainbow Challenge’ consists of independent activities initiated by the teacher (linked to curriculum coverage and progression) and the children (through ongoing discussion and during the planning stage.) They are linked to skills taught the previous week in order to give children the opportunity to deepen their understanding and consolidate their thinking. Children manage their own time, to ensure they have completed all activities on the ‘menu’ by the end of the two- weekly cycle. ‘Review time’ plays an important role in allowing children to become reflective learners, talking through their work and planning their own next steps. Children in Year 2 will also be introduced to a personal project of their choice. They will work on this alongside their menu and present back their work to the class, once they reach the end of their project.
Accountability
Children in Year 2 have worked using a negotiated curriculum during their previous time in Year 1. They are involved within their learning as they have had the opportunity to give their ideas towards activities they want to focus on and the peers they can work with at that point in the day. As there are no restrictions on the areas they can use, the free movement gives children of different learning styles a more enabling environment.
Teachers retain a very tight control over the curriculum and outcomes for the children, through ongoing formative assessment of the children. This is done through both teacher led activities and by observing children in their work. Teachers are then able to set challenging targets, which are differentiated to the individual needs of the children. The inclusion of reading, writing and maths skills are an integral part of the negotiated curriculum as this gives children the opportunity to develop and use these skills on a daily basis, in addition to planned, focussed English and maths teaching. This helps the children to make links within their learning and view these skills as relevant to their own lives, with meaning and purpose.
At Kells Lane Primary School we strongly believe in the power of a growth mindset. We believe that ALL children have the ability to achieve what they want to achieve.
Everything we do encourages our children to understand that intelligence can be developed. Our pupils see school as a place to develop their abilities and think of challenges as opportunities to grow.
