Our most recent pupil voice survey told me that children wanted to have more of a say in what they learn and more independence to challenge themselves in lessons. We have altered the structure of our lessons this term to provide more choice, and to allow children access to more ‘using and applying’ tasks that really stretch their thinking and reasoning skills. I have now completed the first cycle of lesson observations in school and am delighted to tell you that your children are fully embracing and enjoying this approach. Under their teacher’s guidance, children are selecting tasks to broaden their understanding; working through ‘bronze’ level challenges to practise a skill; ‘silver’ to extend their thinking further; and ‘gold’ to apply new learning or skills in a different context.
Children in Year 4 will be learning in a completely different environment next week as they visit Dukeshouse Wood for three days. Mr Colligan and Mr McIntosh have asked me to remind Year 4 parents to pack alongside the children so they are familiar with their own belongings. See below for a link to the Dukeshouse Wood website.
Year 5 children will be visiting Safetyworks next week; I have included a link in the table below if you would like to find out more. In their own words, ‘Safetyworks provides an innovative, enjoyable learning experience enabling visitors to participate safely in realistic situations illustrating everyday hazards and how to prevent them’.
Fundraising is hugely important to all schools, particularly as budgets are squeezed ever tighter. If you have any suggestions or would like to offer your support to the group, please do come to our Kells Lane School Fundraising AGM next Wednesday evening at 7pm.
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
