Friday Bulletin – 6th October 2017

6 October 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are very proud of the achievement of all our pupils here at Kells Lane. Our 2017 end of year results* are available for you to view in the ‘About Us’ section of the school website.

The provisional results show that children make excellent progress in our Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception class) and this year 90% of pupils achieved a ‘Good Level of Development’, this is approximately 20% above the Gateshead and national averages.

Children continue to make good progress in Year 1, particularly in developing phonic knowledge and learning to read. In June 2017, 93% of children at Kells Lane passed the government’s phonics screening check, this is an excellent achievement but we are aiming even higher this year with the introduction of our Read Write Inc. phonics in Reception and Year 1. Children continue to make good progress in Year 2. Our results page shows that pupils at Kells Lane achieved higher than Gateshead and national averages in reading, writing and mathematics.

Children continue this journey of excellence across key stage 2 to achieve and excel ‘expected standards’ in Year 6. In May 2017, pupils in Year 6 at Kells Lane achieved excellent results in writing, reading and grammar, punctuation and spelling assessments. We are particularly delighted to see such an improvement in the number of children able to exceed national expectations to achieve a ‘higher standard’; our provisional results for pupils exceeding national standards are higher than the national average in all aspects of English and Mathematics.

We are delighted with the achievement of all pupils at Kells Lane and whilst extremely proud, we are committed to continuing the journey of improvement further still. This year, we are working hard to ensure all pupils fulfil their potential, particularly in maths. Your support is an invaluable component in the progress your child makes at school. Practising basic mathematical skills such as number bonds (pairs of numbers that equal 10, 20 and so on) and learning times tables facts will have a huge impact on your child’s progress in maths.

In order to make this as much fun as possible, school has invested in an online programme called Times Tables Rockstars. Children can practise their times tables, improving speed and accuracy, and can compete against their classmates for a place on the weekly leader board. We will then celebrate these achievements in our Friday Celebration Assembly. The online games will be free for your child to access as soon they bring home their personal login early next week.

Have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs A Whistler
