Curriculum in the Foundation Year The Reception curriculum will be based on the six areas of learning in the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage to include: Personal, Social and Emotional Development - This will include helping to develop the children's confidence in a new setting and to make new friends. To encourage the children to co-operate with one another, dress themselves, learn to share and take turns. Communication, Language and Literacy - To provide opportunities for the children; to talk about real and imaginary events, to choose and use books appropriately, becoming aware of the alphabet shapes and sounds, to introduce early reading and writing skills. Mathematical Development - To provide opportunities for; matching, sorting and classifying objects, the introduction of the language of numbers, colours, size and counting rhymes. Knowledge and Understanding of the World - To provide opportunities for the children; to observe and talk about the world around them, their lives and people who are special to them, and to select and clear away equipment they have used. Physical Development - To ensure the children's physical development by providing opportunities for the development of; gross motor skills through outdoor play and the use of large equipment also fine motor skills; threading, sewing, tracing, copying patterns, cutting and using different tools. Creative Development - To provide opportunities for the development of music, art, drama and dance skills - by providing a range of tasks, materials and situations. Assessment During the first half term, we assess the children's individual needs using the PIPS Baseline Assessment. Ongoing assessment is completed by Reception staff on a day to day basis, using the Baseline Profile. Recording Achievement Parents will be offered a personal interview with the teacher in charge of their child's class, in November and again in March. At the end of the year a written report will be sent home summarising the child's achievement over the year. |
